Oil weights cover oil viscosity at 0 celcius and 100 celcius I believe. What happens after is a somewhat different story. So a oW40 oil would have the same viscosity at 100 celcius as a 10W40, but at higher temperatures is likely to thin faster. Also, the wider the viscosity range, the more viscosity modifiers need to be added and the less stable the viscosity is likely to be over time. Sure technology is continually improving these charteristics, but the wider the range, the greater the lubrication package is compromised. I run 10W30 in the summer 5W30 in the winter. Runs great, no reason to go thinner IMHO.
