Pure age regardless of miles, makes gaskets, hoses, connections, wiring far more prone to failure. Low miles, or lack of use, can make those things worse not better.
In general, newer cars from the late 90's are far more reliable than any car from the 80's. Far less tolerance for defects, better manufacturing, higher quality standards.
And you completely ignored one of the most important aspects, safety. Stronger cars, more air bags, ABS are just a few of the improvements.
