It is probably true that running the spare at the front of a front wheel drive vehicle for too long could do a number on the differential. As far as running 205/55R16s (which I do for pothole protection) instead of 205/50R16s, the vehicle's electronics just think you're driving about 3% slower than you really are. So, shift points happen at a higher actual vehicle speed (on an automatic), and you get the corresponding error on the speedo and SID. The only adverse driveline effects would come from the extra unsprung weight, but I suspect a 17" wheel with 215/45R17s weigh more.
