205/55-16 tires on 1998 900SET automatic for 50K.... I have been using 205/55-16 tires on my 1998 900SET (with automatic transmission) for more than 50,000 miles with no problems what-so-ever.
Your tire man is mistaken. Go ahead and use the 205/55-16 size if you want. Being able to choose between 205/50-16 and 205/55-16 tire sizes will give you a much larger choice of tires. And if you chose the 205/55-16 size, you will get a slightly smoother ride, better pothole protection, but a small loss in handling. The ride and handling changes are very small. The factors of tire pressure and tire sidewall flex/brand have as much to do with ride and handling as the slightly larger tire size.
There will be a slight shift in the speedometer. A speedometer programmed for the 205/50-16 tire size will read about 3% slow (i.e. speedo says 60MPH, car is actually going 62MPH) when using 205/55-16 tire size. If this bothers you, have the speedo programmed for the alternate stock 215/45-17 tire size which is only 1% slower than the 205/55-16 size.
