There's a limit to how much of that wheel torque you can put on the pavement. It's based on how many drive wheels you've got, how much weight is on them, and what the effective friction coefficient between tire and road is.

Good luck getting 2800lbf to the pavement in a 3000lbf car with front-wheel drive :-)

In a Saab, you've got maybe 60/40 weight bias toward the front. In accelerating, you lose some of the weight on the front (drive) tires, but let's not tackle that right now. So 60% of your 3000lbf (1800lbf) is on the drive wheels. Get yourself some nice fancy sticky tires and maybe you can put that much force to the ground (effective friction coefficient = 1) - but that's your limit. More realistically, something like 1500 is probably more like it, given stock tires on good roads.

RWD RX-8 will benefit by weight shifting to the rear (drive) wheels during acceleration. But it's initially balanced around 50/50, and it's low to the ground, so I don't think you're gonna get more than 60% on the rears even under hard acceleration (though I wouldn't swear to it without running the numbers).

You also forgot transmission losses. FWD w/ front engine (Saab) is more efficient than RWD w/ front engine (RX-8). Maybe you get 90% of your crank torque down to the wheels in the Saab, and something like 80-85% in the Mazda.

Bottom line, at least in first gear you're gonna be limited by traction, and the force to the road will be about the same for the two cars. But you're correct in pointing out that since you get to stay in lower gear longer in the RX-8, it should be quicker. Pushing that redline up is good. Now if only they'd turbocharge the bloody thing like the last gen RX-7. :-)
