I have always noticed headlights dimming when an extra load is put on the electrical system, it appears to be getting a little worse over the last couple of months, i.e., dimming lower, maybe a little longer. This is all perception though. Running in the dark more as we lose daylight.
I mentioned this while at the VFA (18 months ago) and the consensus was that this is a SAAB trait. When I mentioned to the service advisor during routine maintenance, the answer came back that the alternator was putting out less current than spec. Take all this info in and my conclusion is that alternator design might be marginal.
Dean, you might be correct on the battery. I have found the heat here in Austin kills batteries pretty quick as they last about half their rated lifetime. Do you recommend a battery brand? I have always gone to Sears because they do not ask questions when batteries fail under warranty.
Regarding my original inquiry on aftermarket alternators, I was just wondering if something might be a little more robust with more design margin. What brought about my inquiry was a story about installing a big auto system and they had to install a heavy duty alternator for the increased load. Story linked. Of course I am not smart enough to go their link for alternators :-)
Last time I looked, all terminal connections were clean but I can check again.
