If the car rolled back a bit with the clutch in as the key was coming out, you can get into a kind of weird locking situation. I had this happen once

You need to wiggle some variation of the gearshift, the clutch and the key in order to get the mechanism to unlock. If you are worried about the car rolling back, you can try pumping up your foot brake, and using your right foot to keep the brake mashed down while you jiggle the clutch with your left.

Unlike other cars, the steering wheel will not affect any of the locking out mechanisms - there is no sw lock.

You stated that you can get the key out. Have you tried using the spare, as perhaps the original is damaged?

In the future, when parking on an incline, you (or whoever is driving the car) should ensure that the ebrake is engaged before the engine is turned off, and that the clutch is let back out before withdrawing the key.

Like the mechanism of walking, this is a lot more natural than it sounds when described.
