Being unable to turn the key has happened to me several times (99, 9-3), and is still somewhat of a mystery. The first time, a wiggle of shift/clutch and key was enough to release the reverse lock mechanism. The second time, no matter what I did couldn't get it to budge. Had to have it trucked to an indy. When he tried it, it worked fine! He said it would help to lubricate the lock mechanism with light oil (like 3-1). About 4 months later, the most recent time, a wiggle of the shifter was enough to allow the lock to release and the key to turn. It seems the interlock mechanism at the base of the shift lever somehow doesn't get into the right position to engage. The indy said it was a very simple and rugged mechanism, but very hard to get to it for any inspection and/or replacement. I've been afraid it would stick sometime when I'm away from home--but so far so good. The most recent time, I put a little oil into the lock and blew it in with some compressed air--haven't had any problem for the past month. I try to be deliberate with all motions in shutting down: clutch in; shift to reverse; key to off briskly; key out; clutch out. I've searced the posts on the 900 & 9-3. Not much there. We'll all have to stay tuned for more on this issue. Good luck.
