The bearing may be fine, the rubber elements of the upper mounts may be torn. Look in there. A cover to remove perhaps? Look for tears in the rubber. Parked on pavement, parking brake on, no foot brake, engine off, hood up, move the steering wheel back and forth, just to the point where the tire would start to slip on the pavement, but no more. Watch the tops of the strut shafts for gross movement.
If you are doing this stuff, you might as well install new strut inserts and renew the upper mount. Use KYB upper mounts, way less money. If the OEM bearings are ok, clean and repack and put the KYB bearings in your junk box. The OEM bearings, even when old, seem to be better than new KYB bearings. Does the warranty cover the mounts?
The 'plates' only get dammaged if the bearing or mounts fail.
