Going only a mile or two is really hard on the oil.

When the oil gets good and hot the water formed from combustion will all evaporate out. If it never gets good and hot, water and other bad actors accumulate in the oil.

Your engine will thank you for a 30 minute highway drive every week or so.

My daily commute is 95 miles, a month worth of your daily commutes. I've passed a drop-top 900 down to my daughter. She just makes short drives like you do, so I drive the 900 to work once a week or so.
