I think the stereo placement as Niteman says is quite good. The car audio world has changed; you do want to hear the fronts much much more (Old school was to have it louder from the back) Do we sit at home in front of an audiophile system and listen to sound from the back? No. The 9-3 soundstage is quite good and the speakers are placed well to give you a full-range sound coming from the front.

Having said that the quality of the speakers used is where the sound suffers from the most. Paper cone is less than ideal, so making changes in the midrange in the front and back, the midbass in the front will make an astounding difference.

Also, what is lacking in this system is really low bass frequencies that can only be achieved by a subwoofer in the trunk. I have one installed and so have many other folks on this board. This will give you the fill you are looking from the back. The fill should come from the subwoofer and very little from the back drivers. The 'subwoofers' in the stock system do not truly serve their purpose.

Changing the drivers and adding a subwoofer should give most people the higher level sound and punch that is lacking in the stock system.

If that is not enough, you have to go to total change. I've done that because it has always been a dream of mine. I've changed the head unit with an XM module (I gave up the 6-CD changer), added a high current 5 channel amp, changed all the speakers, added a subwoofer and the sound is now in another league. Many times I feel my system sounds as good as my home system.

So it depends what you want and what you are willing to spend. I think Saab built a system suitable to most people's needs while keep a lower price point on the car, which seems to be the strategy in this class.

PS. If you want a list of my components, go to the more by Vivek heading on the top of this post and then click on a heading relating to audio mods. I've posted my system several times. I'm getting tired of typing it again and again. Having said that, I'm hoping to post pictures as well soon for the benefit of others.

Happy Listening! Sound is important!

Vivek
