CD reading/writing technology is based on "burning" (hence the nickname) the bits (0s and 1s digitally or "pits" in CD/audio words that make the sound) by use of a laser onto a dye. The dye is contained on the foil sheet (label).* This "simulates" the pits that are stamped into a commercially available CD.

The problem with CD players (and the difference between low-end and high-end components) is the laser used to detect the "burned" in pits varies. When extremely hot, as electrical components can get, the laser has a more difficult time "reading" the CD due to the "focus" being changed by the temperature change. This would explain why when you first play a burned CD in-dash, it may work (not running car = cool) until things get a bit warmer, and then after 5/10 minutes, you might experience the skipping and dropouts, or why when you hit an equal bump later in the ride the CD may be more prone to skipping.

Your experience clearly demostrates this behaviour, as the CD Changer is a bit more isolated from the high-heat demonstrated in the area of the dash. Remember, the heater is running through the vents there, the player itself, the SID, etc., etc.

As for a solution, maybe pack the dash in ice when you are ready for a burned CD? :-) just kidding. Using better quality CDs might help, as well as possibly using the music/audio specific CD-Rs/CD-RWs, although it won't help with the older ones. I have always tried to use Sony CD-Rs, but that is because when a buddy and I were at school years ago, when 2x and 4X were considered cutting edge (okay not THAT long ago), on his burner we wasted a lot of discs before we got it right. However, from his Sony Burner, with the Sony discs, a few failed towards the end, yet I was able to play what was written to them on my Sony cd/dvd players, old and new. That sold me then and there (although lately, I am not impressed by a lot of Sony goods). You can find them (yellow container) - 2 packs of 50 for 9.99 or 19.99 at most all the time.

Either way, good luck, and hopefully this helps with your questions.

Sean
