When I looked up the BMW study, it was accelerate at 80% throttle until the steady state cruising speed is achieved. Less time is spent in high rpm because cruising speed (steady state) is achieved sooner. Lower RPM during acceleration is injecting more fuel over a longer period of time, thus being less efficient and economical. It seems to work for me because I accelerate briskly, but always seem to have better fuel economy with my cars compared to my more leisurely paced friends. Economy comes from efficiency, which is one of the reasons I love turbocharged engines.
