Well, Saab has officially turned their back on me. They initially offered me $2,000 toward the purchase of a $6,000 used Viggen engine, with no subsidy towards the actual labor involved in installing it.
The customer service department was abhorrent. They were rude and stonewalled me the entire time. I was never given the opportunity to plead my case to them, to tell them that we as a family have owned eight Saabs, or that the car was exceptionally well maintained.
The Saab dealer, Saab Nashua North in Merrimack, New Hampshire was no better. They simply played dumb and claimed that they knew of no other Viggen engines failing in a similar fashion. This is sort of ironic in that they were able to correctly diagnose the problem without so much as running a compression test. They refused to tell me how they came to the conclusion that the piston had in fact broken and destroyed the engine.
I have since moved the car to an independent Saab mechanic, Saabworks, in Milford, NH and am in the process of having my engine rebuilt. The walls of cylinder 1 were scored and I am therefore having it bored out by 10/1000's and having custom pistons made. All told it's going to cost me about $4,000 to get the car running again, not to mention the two months of payments I've had to make without the use of the car.
Saab is lucky I don't work for the post office, because a large part of me really wants to go postal on their asses.
