Since you are already in there and know how cramped and tricky it is I don't think I can give you any guiding light that would suddenly make all the pieces fall into place.
It is a very boring job to replace that expansion valve and I use the A/C oil to lubricate the o-rings and then very carefully wiggle the valve back and forth while at the same time tightening down the hold down screws for pipes.
By moving the valve a little during the tightening process, I kind of massage the orings into position.
This goes for all A/C pipe applications around the car. By wiggling the pipe and at the same time hand tightening the collar nut for pipes, you can feel how the o-ring slide into place. If not, you will hear a crunching noise when the o-ring is crushed.
