For the last two years, the A/C worked fine, but it made the whole car vibrate. The vibration wasn't coming from the engine, but from the evaporator. It was annoying, but I could live with it. Especially since my wife drives it. You could also hear a "slide whistle" noise every time the expansion valve opened up. It kinda sounded like the noise a clown might make. Last february, when I drove the car to Key West, I noticed that the A/C would intermitantly stop cooling. The compressor would still be engaged, but the air out of the vents would get warm. Then, all the sudden, it would start cooling again. Thats when I knew for sure it needed the expansion valve. The new expansion valve fixed everthing. The car cools properly, and there are no vibrations or noises.
Before the valve was replaced, the low side pressure was about 20-30 psi engaged, as it should be. The high side was around 200. I never checked it when it was acting up.
There isn't much to A/C. If you are sure the compressor is compressing, you have the proper ammount of freon, and you still don't have cool air at the vents, suspect the expansion valve.
