Dearest RonK,
In my sentence, "...without pulling some of that ghetto gray lining back...", the word "ghetto" is not used as an adjective to modify the word "gray," i.e. state of the lining's grayness. Rather, it is used independently as an adjective to modify the word "lining," which has already been described as gray. Therefore, the word "ghetto" serves to attribute qualities of ghettoness* solely unto the lining -- not the gray color of the lining. Perhaps it would have been wise to include a comma after the word "ghetto," but the sentence would then read like a speedbump. And nobody wants that, especially a Saab driver.
Now, had I intended to coin the nomenclature for a new Saab interior color -- "ghetto gray" as it were -- I would have employed the use of a hyphen ( - ) to solidify the relationship between the modifying adjective ("ghetto") and the noun to be modified ("gray").
But I didn't intend that, now did I, silly?
