Before spending $1000s try the easy bits first. The main relay. When this goes the dash lights go down and the engine shuts down. Get the Haynes manual and study the electric diagrams. The relay fails first intermittently, but eventually it becomes a regular issue causing dangerous engine stalls in the middle of the traffic and no starts. The main relay also supplies the current to the fuel pump through the fuel pump relay. So any of these relays if they fail the engine will stall. However if the fuel pump relay fails the dash light should not go dim. Also I heard many people here diagnosing faulty fuel pumps for no starting problems which I am not convinced this is the case. Fuel pumps don't fail intermittently, they will gradually fail giving drivability problems before they give up. The only way they will give intermittent problems is if they is a wirring fault, one of the above relays or the ignition switch is playing up.
