I had difficulty removing the drain plug, and with how soft, ended up ruining things. Turned out it was because I was trying with the 12-pt socket. Also, all the while bad mouthing the dealership.
So I picked up a plug, some pliers, and had a go at it. Eventually, I went to a quickie lube place who was able to help. All for $0, which was great for me. I did supply new plug, oil, filter, gasket, etc., but was willing to avoid your result of a new pan. So I was surprised by the no charge.
Quickie lube indicated he was able to use a smaller size on it and remove it. Since then, I do my own, and rather than bothering with the socket, I use a wrench. Works MUCH better. So to answer your questions -
1. Yes, many, especially those here, change their own oil (depending on income, time, willingness, etc.).
2. No need to torque the "heck" out of the plug. Simply turn until compression on your "gasket" (I use the copper rings, but did recently buy the other type to try - metal of sorts with "rubber" coating).
3. Not really special, other than being soft to avoid overtorque, as mentioned by others. Not a special tool, just the proper one - 6pt!!! socket or wrench.
4. Must, or at least, one should use the gasket (see answer 3).
Well, you made a pricey mistake (I lucked out that mine wasn't as bad a result), so I am sure you won't do it again. We all make mistakes, and the best we can do is try to learn from them, and not make the same one (especially the pricey ones) too often again.
Best bet is to get back in the saddle and try it again! I choose to change my own, as the price savings is almost minimal, but moreso for the knowing I did it myself, and only have myself to blame. Think of it as a learning experience, and hey, you don't have to worry about sludge for a long while now (as long as you stay on top of things)! Good luck!!! We are all here to help!
