I've been using "regular" wrenches on my wife's Saab since we bought it. I also use them on my Ford, on my Porsche, on my old VW, etc. You can't overtorque a copper gasket too much. It crushes very easily, and is typically damaged by overtorquing. Were you using metric wrenches (I have to ask)? The break-away torque (torque when loosening a fastener) is typically greater than the torque used to tighten a fastener. So, putting a wrench on something and pushing to loosen it is difficult. Using an "impact" force works better. To loosen the drain plug, put your wrench on the bolt (socket or box wrench---make sure they're metric), and put one hand on the wrench, and apply a slight force, like you're going to start loosening it. Then, hit the hand holding the wrench with the palm of your other hand. This impact will break the fastener free.
