ACC appears to read in Kelvin

I bought an '01 Viggen a couple of weeks ago. Hehe...fun.
I should have no complaints...
However, the automatic climate control doesn't appear to function properly. At 68 deg. F, it feels more like 60. At 82 degrees, it's maybe 68. It's a bit warmer at night, when the daylight sensor isn't excited.
In freezing rain (this past weekend in the pacific northwest), 82 is inadequate to keep the windshield clear. I had to run the ACC at max, which brought the cabin temp. up to the mid nineties. Cracking the windows and sunroof afforded a comfortable interior temperature, but I wouldn't call that "automatic" climate control.
I performed the calibration described in the manual (press auto and off simultaneously, if I recall), to no improvement.
Am I missing something obvious? Has anyone else encountered something like this?
While I'm at it, a couple of other questions.
1. The engine thermostat is functioning properly, but the indicator in the instrument panel never even twitches from its resting spot around 8 o'clock. I'm thinking faulty connection or broken guage. Does this indicator read from the thermostat? Is this a common failure mode?
2. The search engine for this board seems rudimentary. Are there any logical operands for more sophisticated searching?
Great community - thanks, all.
-eric.
