There will always be debate on this subject but I took my new AWD sedan out yesterday (with Gislaved snow tires) and it will run rings around my Saab with Arctic Alpins. To be fair, the S60R does have stability control (the 9-3 only has TCS) but for the lone reason of being able to accelerate when I want and not have to worry about whether or not I will actually move is a HUGE "pro" for having AWD.
Case in point - yesterday I was driving in a few inches of new snow and an oncoming car lost it in front of me going around a corner and started to spin. I punched the throttle in the S60R and was able to get by the oncoming car in the breakdown lane before it crushed me. No slippage, no drama, just strong acceleration as if I was on dry pavement. If I had been in my 9-3, I likely would have been hit as the TCS would have killed the power to keep-up with the traction limitations of FWD.
Not trying to start a flame war but just want to clarify that solely as respects acceleration in slippery conditions, I believe that an AWD car is inherently better (IMHO).

Derek
