I couldn't agree more about TCS but as respects your truck v. a 9-3, to me that is apples & oranges. The 9-3 is a "performance" vehicle with a much better suspension, lower center of gravity, etc...
As respects the Audi, it could have come down to tires and for a FWD car, weight transfer is an issue. The Audi may have had summer performance rubber which would certainly eliminate any AWD advantage it had. Also, are you sure it was a Quattro? Not all A4s are AWD... As respects going-up a hill, FWD is at a disadvantage v. a RWD car let alone AWD given that weight transfers from the drive wheels to the rear. I have experienced this first-hand with my Saab going-up a steep hill and was passed by an old BMW 325 which albeit notorious for handling horrible in the snow due to its RWD nature, rolled right past me.
Long story short, there are a lot of variables that can account for a FWD car being "better" in the snow than an AWD car but unless we know all of them, comparing two vehicles is a moot point (IMHO).
Regards,
Derek
