Any one out there with a sludged engine. I just purchased a 2001 9-3 that developed what I thought was a tappet noise, the noise got a lot loader and now the dealer has said it has a bad con rod and needs a $6500 short block. According to Motor Trend SAAB has recalled the engines and will extend to warranty to eight years. According to Derjan Aaslund of SAAB "This guarantee means that customers who have been affected by motor problems due to oil sludge will receive full financial compensation". In practice it seems that statement is not true and SAAB is extending the warranties only if the owner can provide all oil change receipts with the right viscosity oil, something somewhat hard to do if your not the original owner. I've heard they're even asking for cancelled checks from independent shops. They don't want to repair these cars. They're clearly putting a nice face on this for the press but in practice they're not standing behind these cars. If you can produce the receipt the failure is a serial defect, if you can't produce the receipts ( even if you performed the oil changes) then they claim it's lack of maintainance. WHat's causing this lack of maintenance or a serial defect? Does anyone out also have a sludged engine and any experience dealing with SAAB on this issue or any additional information on where this statement originated from and if there has been a retraction printed?
