I've been battling with a shakey steering wheel for months now. I repalced my struts (DIY) back in January. Soon after I noticed a shaking at 50-60MPH. Since then I have put new tires on all four wheels, put a new strut mount on the right side, and brought it to four different local shops. The last one is a Saab/Volvo/BMW indie. I had him tear both struts apart. He found the right-side strut was a bit loose, as was the brake caliper. Aparently the mount (Scantech) that I put on the right-side is thicker than the Saab OEM. It was not allowing the hex bolt in the bottom of the calpier to tighten and lock. This shop uses the same mounts. They put the strut back together, used Lock-Tite on some of the threads and sent me on my way. On my way home I noticed a slight back-and-forth like before- not as extreme, slight. It has been a week later and I am noticing the shaking becoming more pronouced, I think the strut is loosening again.
Is there anything else I should have them look at? Any suggestions at all? I am about at my wits end with this suspension. It not costed me a whole lot ($195 for the strut tear-down on both sides), but the frustration is enormous! ANY help will be appreciated.
