I remember my first car, an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, had the EXACT same problems you are describing. The alternator was providing a good charge, I believe it was barely sufficient, an 8 charge or something? When the normal for the Cutlass was between 13 and 16.

Anyways when I would accelerate the hesitation was VERY frustrating. It was almost as though the car would sip on gas, then the gas would vanish along with the acceleration, and then it would come back once the fuel was pumped into the engine. Of course the gas wasn't the problem, but I am just trying to relate.

Have them check the alternator, that's my guess.
