I have a 00' 9-3SE with Bridgestone Potenza SO-3 tires (205/50ZR16). They have lasted only 20k miles and need to be replaced. Some guy at work has a set of Dunlop Sport SP 2000 tires (215/45ZR17) with 17x7.5 inch rims he apparently got from a friend who works at a Saab dealership. The rims are 5 spoke with Saab center caps. They looked like they came off an '03 or later model or maybe a Viggen. Anyway, from looking around on this site it looks like they will fit, not totally sure. But I'm a little sketched out about buying used tires from who knows where.

I brought home one of them to inspect. The tire has a patch in it, slight cracking at the base of the treads, and is worn pretty good on one side. I am worried that eventhough it seems to have some life left in it, it might be dangerous to drive. They could have been overinflated or left in storage for too long. I have no way of knowing.

I asked why this guy even has them, and he said that they came off a vehicle sold to auction, which was then refitted with smaller rims. It doesn't make much sense but what do I know?

He wants $200 (maybe less) for all four tires & rims...a good deal, but not if I get into a wreck from a blowout. Plus the Dunlops don't have as great of reviews as the Potenzas which I have been pretty happy with.

So is it a bad idea to go for it?. Actually after re-reading my own posting I think I should just cough up the money and get new tires. 17 inch rims aren't that important too me, but I wouldn't mind better handling potential.

Anyway, hopefully this rambling gets a useful response. thanks.
