To make a long story short, when I bought a used SAAB audio upgrade kit for my 99 9-3, one of the factory speakers got punctured during shipping. I replaced the stock speakers with some Infiniti 65.1MB mid bass speakers and installed them using the mounting hardware that came with the stock speakers (the black plastic mounts, the foam inserts glued to the front of the speakers.)
The problem is that I think I might have over-done it.
There is a LOT of very punchy bass at anything above moderate levels of volume. The door panels don't exactly vibrate really, because I shored them up pretty well when I had them off, but they resonate and the bass gets muddled within the door. It sounds like it is just overpowering the enclosure in the doors, which is something I didn't expect using the factory amp. The material on the Kappas is stiffer than the plastic on the stock speakers, and the magnet is stronger (max watt handling is 100 vs. 50) although I am not sure how much that matters with a reasonable 20-30 watts powering it.
Does anyone have any suggestions for reducing the amount of punch these things are making?
-Is there a passive sort of gain reducer I can install inline somewhere?
-Should I try filling the doors/lining the doors with something? Dynamat, or maybe batting to kill some of the punch?
-Should I try mounting the speakers without the factory hardware (the black plastic cradles and the foam inserts that sit on the speakers)?
-Should I try to place spacers to let more air get around the woofer?
-Should I just try different speakers, and if so, what is known for a more mellow less punchy sound with the amp provided?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I really didn't expect this to be an issue! I thought I was staying pretty much "stock" and would get a good blended sound.
Thanks.
