Yes, I was very happy to see it quite clean. Checking for sludge was another reason to open the valve cover.
There is orange-brown varnish at the timing chain end, and some at the other end, but otherwise very nice.
Car currently has ~80K km. I bought it at 31K km. Two documented changes before 30K, plus another the previous owner said was done but had no documentation. Then one at the 30K service by the dealer. Unknown oil, except the dealer who used saab semisynthetic.
From 31 K on, changes every ~7500 to 8000 km using Castrol 0w30 (made in germany stuff) or Castrol 5w40 (belgian). AutoRX clean cycle at ~36K.
Usage is bimodal: lots of short trips (<14 km) and a 2000 km+ highway road trip during most OCI, but not many trips of intermediate length.
I have used oil analysis from most of the changes. Car has had a persistent fuel dilution issue (1 -- 2.5%), probably due to primarily short trip driving before the OC, especially in winter. The best UOA by far was a single interval of Esso XD3 0W40 (HDEO synthetic available only in Canada). No dilution and hardly any wear, but its not A3 so I stopped using it for warranty issues.
PCV system is original.
