Extended warranty thoughts. Posted by Walt [Email] (#2707) [Profile/Gallery]

Hi All,
I am in Canada, and my US 2000 9-3 is approaching 50K and thus about to end the factory 4/50K warranty.
Visited my dealer yesterday to inquire about extended plans and am now trying to figure out what I should do. Wondering if you saabneters could offer any thoughts.
Was presented with a plan that is almost bumper-bumper (minus a couple of things like strut mounts, fuel pump and sender, dash elecs).
Prices in km/miles cdn/us
24mos/120000km (75000miles) $2575CDN / $1925US (25K warranty)
36mos/140000km (87500miles) $3415CDN / $2550US (37.5K warranty)
48mos/160000km (100,000miles) $4111CDN / $3070US (50k warranty)
So, here is my dilemma, and I know many people have gone through this. I am basically looking at $100 a month for the life of the warranty, should I just pay up and move on, or what are my chances of having necessary repairs cost less than this.
Also worth noting is that I will pay a $50 deductable with any repair.
I like the idea of having the warranty, and am leaning towards buying one. But I'm hoping to make the best decision.
With my old golf, I found that when the car was off warranty I could have it repaired at a trusted indy, with factory parts sourced by myself, for 1/2 to 1/3 of the quoted dearer price, and it needed very minimal repairs anyway. In that case there was no way I would have been better off buying the warranty as offered at the time. All repairs done in the 3 years it was out of warranty did not add up to the extended warranty price.
But this is a SAAB.
I'm wondering if the above prices are much more than what I can expect to pay assuming I source parts myself (eeuroparts, genuinesaab, etc) and have them installed either by myself (I'm pretty handy, brakes, fluids, tuneups, etc) or an indy for the bigger jobs.
The car is currently in great shape, as I said, 50k miles. If you bought an extended warranty, has it paid off? If you didn't buy one, do you regret it? How much would you say you are averaging in repairs if you average it monthly?
Even if I buy the warranty, I'll still be paying for brakes, clutch, etc, but not for non-wear, broken bits.
Any illumination/ruminations most welcome. I pretty much need to decide this week.
Thanks in advance,
Walt
