Thank you, Jim.
What is most troubling about this problem is that both mechanics first reported nothing is wrong – nothing obviously loose. But after driving the car WITH them, they both admit that the steering is much looser than it should be and agree something is wrong. After a second trip to the lift mechanic #1 says I need a new rack and inner tie-rods. Mechanic #2 says the rack is fine and he’s 90% sure the problem is slightly loose ball joints (which he says usually need to be replaced after 60K miles – I’m at 52k) and a slightly loose strut.

As both are expensive propositions ($1400 v. 600, respectively) -- I’m trying to make an informed decision as I’ve already spent over $500 on 2 alignments, tire balancing, a power steering pump, a new rubber transmission mount (connects to steering torque rods) and diagnostic fees…

Can I pick your brain one more time? I’m not sure what step I should take next… When I’m driving and I take a bump – say a NYC pot hole, or a diagonal asphalt seam – the steering wheel will jolt and the car will want to follow the contour of the surface defect. And if the road is a washboard of patched holes the steering wheel bounces like pin ball paddles – even at really low speeds. When the steering was tight the car took the same road with only a shutter on the steering wheel. The steering is loose and floaty – not at all wobbly or clunky. And the looseness is more pronounced at high speeds where the typically snug Saab steering connects you to the road. Can you think of anything else I should consider?

Thank you so much for your time. You’ve been a great help -- and your thoughts (and diagrams) have been put to use in the form of questions to my mechanic(s). I can now identify nearly every part of my front suspension and steering system on site!

Best,
~robert
