I put a Saab/Thule rack on my 1997 900SE coupe, with excellent results. Carried 2 mountain bikes in fork-mount Thule trays (old style, not Velo-Vise). I modified a Thule fairing to extend the attachment struts and also bolted an extended Lexan fairing to the top of the Thule fairing. I also modified the bike trays to provide clearance for the bikes' disk brake calipers.
I added a 3rd carrier to the center of the rack (SportRack upright mount) but found I rarely used it. Also had 2 wheel holders mounted on the rear bar but didn't use them much either.
The nice thing about the Saab/Thule rack is that it's inexpensive, doesn't require it's own locks, and allows you to install and remove the entire rack (bike trays and all) in one piece. I would simply use a folded towel to protect the roof on the side that I attached last/removed first.
Good luck - JMJ
