Mirror Glass - Replacing actual glass only

Hi all
Broke my mirror recently. Outrageous cost to replact the mirror glass insert complete with the heating element (€111). So I am wondering if I can simply put in a peice or OEM mirror (€20) directly onto the heating element. The shop said that they think the heating element will dry up the glue and it will fall off. Sould I try to stick the pure glass on to the heating element using butyl tape? What is so special about the way the Saab mirror is bonded to the element. Just looks like sticky butyl tape to me.
Thanks
Ed.
