You should find many related posts on this issue. I have a '97 with 110,000 miles and have gone through 4 cables now. One tip before replacing the thing - turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, reach behind the left front wheel and find the cable, grab it and try to move it (push and pull). You may hear a click or two, that is the self adjustment mechanism. This made the pedal feel much better temporarily.
I keep a spare and the installation instructions handy.
