I only know one bit of puzzle:

AWD is a marketing gimmick. It is applied to cars where both front or rear wheels can receive torque -- but not at the same time. (That's the difference from 4WD, where all 4 wheels are pulling, all together).
In AWD, the torque has the ability to be applied to EITHER front axis or rear axis.

When this occurs is a mistery. The computer onboard is "supposed to figure it out". The net effect will be such that an AWD car most of the time will be a front-wheel drive, but in some circumstances may be "rear-wheel" drive.

From having a Subaru for a few years, I must say, I never noticed any particular advantages to AWD. In the daily driving, nobody probably ever will. The test-time comes only in the winter, on the icy / slushy roads.
Then, I see cars doing a lot of strange things -- fishtailing, rotating themselves across the road, rotating themselves into on-going lanes, getting stuck in 6" snowbanks, etc.

I suspect much of this is plain inexperience, but some of this may be related to the car's design. Under these conditions, my SAAB behaved better than SUBARU. Or at least, that was my subjective impression. It stopped noticably faster. That was enough to tilt my scales.

I am curious to know how people compare driving a regular car with a 4WD in the snow?
