Fuel Pump?

Almost two years ago, my indie told me my fuel pump looked as if the previous owner had run over something that hit the tank and pump really hard. He said it was bent up but it would be cheaper to straighten it and see if it would be alright rather than replace it (5-600 dollar part plus labor).
Being poor, I went with the easy solution and it seemed to work. However, I have had a shudder or surge when putting the auto trans into gear for the first second or two it is in gear... pretty much since I've owned the car. It isn't consistent though and I hadn't noticed that until the other day. My tank was getting extremely low (as I'm trying to buy as little gas lately as possible) and the shudder started happening constitently as my tank was under 1/4 full. Recently, I filled the tank on a big trip and had no shuddering.
I'm sure, at this point, it sound rather obvious but do you think the mouth of the fuel pump is not as low in the tank as it should be? It is probably time I bite the bullet and drop the 750+ to have my indie replace the entire pump and sending unit but I wanted a few opinions before I ravaged my savings.
Any similar experiences?
