1st gear engagement issue

Hi,
I have been having an issue with my car ever since I bought it back in 98 (900s). Sometimes, when I am ready start out from a stop the car will stall. It does not happen all the time and it can happen in any type of weather and only happens in first gear from a dead stop.
What happens is, as I ease off the clutch I feel a slight hesitation and notice the RPM’s actually drop from around 1K to around 800. If I catch it early enough I just give it more gas and all is fine. However it can happen so quickly you can’t react and it stalls.
I know the quick answer is to give it more gas when I start out but that does not address the problem. I should note the clutch engages really early. The pedal is probably barley a ½ in off the floor before the gear is engaged. I am used to driving it this way however I never let anybody else drive the car because of this issue. I fear it will stall on them in a spot where they can not react fast enough to restart it. Has anyone else experienced this and how would go about fixing this?
Thanks,
Rob
