Yeah you don't want to "pre tension" the tensioner and screw it back in. That could easily lead to too much tensionen being applied to the chain and it would wear down the guides quicker.
But if you help the tensioner along with a tug on the intake cam it only moves to the next step/tooth which it would do very soon anyway.
