So I'm beginning to believe my banged up fuel pump is on its way out.

There was a post on this site saying there may be a way to avoid the $550-600 part plus the nasty labor... but mainly, by finding the same fuel pump (without the saab label, of course) for $100-200 at napa or something like that.

In that suggestion, are we talking about the entire fuel pump and assembly or are we talking about JUST THE FUEL PUMP?

Also, is there a risk involved with just replacing the pump and not the entire assembly? What is the purpose of the assembly?

And if anyone has any experience with replacing their fuel pump without dropping the $700 total bill, please let me know. The car has 150k miles on it... hardly worth pumping thousand dollar bills in it at this point.
