I replaced my fuel pump about a month ago on my 98 900SE (140K miles). I opted to replace just the pump (not the whole assembly). The assembly is simply a canister that sits in the fuel tank and acts as a reservoir for the fuel pump, which sits inside it. It has fuel lines for outflow and return, as well as the level bobber (a lot like what you find in your toilette). I imagine it is certainly a lot easier to replace the whole assembly, but it wasn’t worth the extra 200+ for parts that were working just fine...
With the help of a friend, I dropped the tank (which was nearly empty) and pulled out the assembly. To replace the pump you have to pretty much take the whole assembly apart, which isn't terrible, but it takes some time. It helps if you take pictures along the way to know how it goes back together once you have the new pump. If you're being cautious like I was, this took a few hours.
The last link below provided this tip: When putting it back together, there is the fuel line that goes to the pump that you will need to replace with standard fuel-grade hose (cost about 50 cents) and some stainless steel hose clamps. The original hose is very VERY rigid and you will probably not be able to reuse it.
The hardest part of the job for me was getting the tank back up. Again, the help of a friend can make it doable. All said and done, the job took a couple of days for me to complete. I took my time to make sure I didn’t mess it up. The cost of the pump was about $110 or so from a local parts store (CarQuest). I also put in a new fuel filter while I was at it. After everything was done, the car started up on the first try. Very rewarding feeling...
Here was my experience with the pump:
