Boosting into the red and engine cutting out

On my recently acquired '98 900SE 5spd w/118K--when I first got it (three weeks ago)it would get slightly into the red. Now it gets way into the red and sometimes the engine cuts out. I'm doing an oil change, new spark plugs, air cleaner etc on Saturday which is the first time I'll have a chance to really look the car over. Any ideas on what's going on?
