I was reading something to the contrary somewhere, but have cleared that up per this:
BILSTEIN HEAVY DUTY
Designed to offer ride comfort while providing much improved performance. Bilstein HD's work well in conjunction with stock springs. Certain HD's for A1 and A2 cars can also be used on moderately lowered cars. HD's for other cars are best for use with stock springs only. Call our tech department for details.
BILSTEIN SPORT
Designed to push a car's suspension to its performance peak, these shocks are designed for lowered springs. The shortened stroke of the Sport ensures proper spring preload and correct positioning of the suspension's travel range. Sport valving for the A1 Chassis is much firmer than HD. The A2 and A3 Sports have the same valving as the comparable HD, but feature the shorter shafts best for sport springs. Limited lifetime warranty.
