Which thermostat to use?

A friend of mine lives in Massachusetts has a 97 900S non-turbo...
Two issues: his coolant level indicator has been coming on regardless of whether or not the coolant is full (which it usually is). He took it to his saab mech, and the saab mech said he had a leak in his radiator, said to replace rad and thermostat.
Question? Can the leak in rad be responsible for coolant level sensor malfunction?
Question? Can he benefit from using an 82C thermostat if he has the original 89C thermoswitch for the fan? Or would that harm the engine?
Thanks,
aaron
