If you don't hear a whine (it's not very loud--listen closely), then the pump is probably dead. If it's the original pump at 150k miles, then I'd say its a good bet. Pounding on the tank doesn't always work, and yes, a pump can die while driving.
The pump in my 9k died over the summer at around 140k miles...thankfully it was in my driveway. Do a search for fuel pump here and I'm sure the procedure is posted somewhere...Good luck!
