My '97 900S has been excellent, the things I would look at are the rear shock tower mounts they can leak and rust(you need to remove the rear panels to get a good look at them),if the car has had oil changes every 5K or so the motor will go along time, they need the trans fluid changed at no more than 30k intervals and the trans will last a long time. I've replaced the battery 3 times in 179k when they get weak I would get weird electrical gremlins, starter motor, ignition switch, fuel pump (don't let it run out of gas!)foglights twice(smashed)tie rod ends, brake rotors/pads in the front 3 times, exhaust flex center twice, complete exhaust once(cat back) but the car has gone lots of miles, 9years and still returns 34mpg on the highway at 65mph. I just had a friend detail the exterior and he remarked at how good the paint looked for a 9 year old car. FWIW I paid $18k in '99 for it with 20k total cost of everthing (less gas and insurance)has been just over $25k currently the only thing that doesn't work is the driver side seat heater, I'll fix that soon.
I'd buy it, I feel my car is worth way more than $1500.
