Many reasons to get it:
1. Safety - For 1500 there's no safer car, except maybe grandma's 96 buick park avenue or similar, but who wants to drive that? Have doubt? check NHTSA.com and the actual injury records for cars of any year since 94 - Saab beats the japanese on this one.

2. Reliability - most bugs get worked out in the first 30k, even if it initially has more than a model from the rising sun - if maintained (which you've said you can do) the parts are similar in price to japanese for any common items. Then the 100k rubber/clutch/etc fixup should take you to 200k - my mitsubishi started falling apart at 140k, but my saab at 120k is similar to the mitsu at 65k - find out what has been done maint. wise on your car and make a list of what it will cost to maintain the rest. should be the same cost as a japanese model and even newer US models.

3. Fun to drive - equal to most or better, these make great city cars! - not too big, agile, but easily cover a large distance also. Huge hatch negates most guzzler needs (pickup or urban assault vehicle) and the 4 door makes a good family car!

4. Economy - Gas mileage on Saabs is some of the best out there because of the 4cyl - only low rev V6's compete - I have saab's 3.0 on my 9000 but it has a high rpm zing that reminds me of an alfa while still getting 19/28

If all buyers were logical in their buying there'd be millions of Saabs out there (I bet lots of Volvo owners would also defect if they they weren't so easily subdued by marketing - seen the new FOrdvolvo crash stats? they're slipping...) The other end of the spectrum would be Dodge owners (every one I've ever know bought their car almost purely on "Looks"
And if there were tons of Saabs out there, the parts prices would drop, bringing more. But then you wouldn't have such a unique car - and that last point is the final plus in my book!
