The SRS light is on to denote that there was a fault in the system (i.e. you disconnected the airbag with the battery connected).

The airbag WILL likely work fine in an accident as I've seen several 900 owners with the light on who have had airbag deployment in an accident. Removing the SRS ECU is a bad idea. Take your SAAB to a dealership and tell them that the airbag light needs to be reset; that is the only way to get it to go out and it won't likely cost you much, especially if you have it done with other service (like CEL diagnostic). I had to do this on my 900SE after disconnecting the instrument cluster harness with the battery connected (disconnected by the ECU to verify tach signal, but it's a long story).
