I know there are several on the board looking for a better way to hook an ipod or XM into the head unit. This antenna disable really works.
The weakness of this approach is that one is still depending on the FM modulator, which does not give best range of sound. But it isn't bad, its about the same as any other strong FM signal.
The advantage of the approach is that it is a simple, simple splice. I got a simple switch at Autozone, drilled a 3/4 inch hole into one of the spare plugs near the heated seat switch. I ran three lengths of wire between the switch area and the radio (with plenty of extra length). I then cut the antenna wire a couple of inches away from the radio (the radio unit labels all the wires for you. I spliced a wire at either end of the cut. The third wire connected the ground of the (lighted) switch and the ground on the radio. Using simple wire nuts by the radio and crimp connectors by the switch it was a no solder job. The in car portion was less than half an hour.
With antenna down the local clear channel AM stations come in OK. FM stations are few/far between. XM is great.
