Hard to start and backfires when hot

Recently, in the last few days, it has been unseasonably warm here in Colorado. Conicidently, yesterday after a long bout around town, when I went to start my '94 900SE V6, it died on the first crank, just after firing. I cranked it again, it fired and then died. It repeated this several times and then finally started. When it started it ran horribly rough (like it was only firing in 2 cylinders) and then backfired a few times through the intake. I gave it some throttle and it eventually smoothed out, reved and then idled fine. The problem didn't return on subsequent starts.
Today, after driving to Denver (60 minutes on the Interstate at 80 mph), it did the exact same thing. The problem repeated with each subsequent startup. I did notice a strong smell of gas this time.
What does this sound like? I am thinking its a temperature related problem as it only does it when the car is warm. Does the V6 have a coolant temperature sensor? What are the symptoms of this failing. What do you all think might be the problem?
