If greenhobby says his V1 works at that location and you also have a V1 that's a better opinion than my observations.
I don't know what kind of glass was used in 96, but my 99 has several disadvantages for a portable radar detector:
1) Factory glass was "green glass" to reduce the UV transmission.
2) My 9-3 also has an aftermarket tint (front, sides and rear).
3) My 8 year old K40 is ready for retirement. It has fallen from the visor and windshield a dozen times. I also stuff it in my laptop bag when I fly and use a rental car for several days.
Based upon the frequency of my false alarms from the sun, I get a significantly fewer false readings mounted above the mirror. This indicates that I’m either getting less light into the detector at this location or that it’s working better out of the direct sunlight. I’d lean towards less light.
I normally don't drive at excessive speeds (~8-12 over) and have gotten 3 speeding tickets the past 15 years (1 with the K40, 2 without). If the cop keeps the radar on I have no problems detecting the cop within a mile or two. The instant on will give my detector (or me) trouble determining if it’s a false reading or a cop over the horizon.
